Training for Triathlons - Not as Easy as Many Think
Training for triathlons is taxing on body and mind. Now, just about everyone--those who have done it, those who have thought about it, and those who would never consider it--knows that this is true. But there's a big deal of difference between just being informed of it and actually understanding it.
People typically can't appreciate what another person goes through to achieve their results with nearly anything, unless they do the same or a similar thing. It remains a vague mystery or else it just gets underappreciated all the way around. It can be a sad situation, really.
What's the point of all this discussion? It's to let you know that you may not be all that much appreciated for your arduous training. And since your arduous training is going to take you away from other activities...activities that for some of you were "normal" before you started your training, things like watching television in the evenings and eating plenty of, shall we say, anti-fitness foods, and not going running at "odd" hours, and...well, you get the picture...you just need to be prepared to deal with the changes.
Many people who get into triathlon training are also going to have a sudden change in diet. This is a switch away from the aforementioned "anti-fitness" foods. Now this can cause havoc in their personal lives. They're suddenly in need of only lean beef. No more McDonald's or other fast food! They cut out almost all french fries when they used to be a staple of their diet. They say goodbye to the romance with jelly doughnuts in the mornings. And the sauces their spouses or significant others always cook with or they always order when they go out...no more; they'll no longer eat them. Most noticeable of all is: where's the sugar? They just don't want the sugar anymore. And goodbye fried foods (not just french fries, either).
But you also have to start taking time away from your friends. You're not going out to the bars as much any longer, or you cancel out on that Thursday night poker game, or you can't talk on the telephone as much anymore because you're out in some dark woods running or over at the local university pool swimming.
And your sleep schedule might be off as far as your friends are concerned, too. Not much of a night-owl any longer are you? You want to be "early to bed and early to rise" to make yourself healthy and wise. When your friends want to go hang out until midnight at Coyote Ugly you're just not interested. You've got to hit the hay so you can be up before the dawn!
And let's just say your "energy" is going to be different, too. You aren't going to be content to watch television as much any longer, after you get deep into your triathlon training. You're going to feel restless. You might take up new (or old and forgotten) hobbies. You might start getting (back) into woodworking. Anything to keep yourself more energized mentally and emotionally.
I know some of this sounds strange, but the bottom line is: training for triathlons will involve changes in you, and you want to be mentally prepared to handle those changes.
