Triathlon Training Programs - How to Set Them Up
So, you're going to enter the next triathlon event in or near your town this coming Summer. You figure that you're already a solid swimmer and a competent runner and cyclist, and you know you have more energy than the average bear. So, you figure that you don't have to think or plan too hard for your triathlon training program. And, you're a fool.
You cannot be successful at this highly demanding sport of triathlon competition without a good training program. But this begs the question: what makes for a good triathlon training program?
You'll need to come up with a triathlon training program tailored to you as an individual, for starters. Where are you starting from fitness-wise as compared to the general run of those who will be your competitors? What is your basic athletic talent level? How much do you know about different training techniques and methods? What kind of attitude do you have? What is your temperament?
So, you're starting to see that this triathlon training business is not so simple as it first appears to be. It requires a level of commitment, discipline, persistence, and patience that the average person just doesn't have for anything outside of (maybe) their marriage.
Well, once you have those questions above answered, you'll need to set up a schedule of training days and activities for yourself. Yes, this should be planned out well in advance. If you're organized and well planned out, you won't be "surprising yourself". You can't wing your triathlon training. You have to train mentally as well as physically for that grueling day of glory to come. Start learning to discipline yourself early on. On the day of the race, you aren't going to be allowed to do the run first, the swim second, and the cycling last just because that's what you feel like doing that day. Training for an intense sport can bring out a person's deepest passions, but your emotions cannot be allowed to rule you. Tell yourself what you're doing days or weeks in advance so that your subconscious mind can take over and begin the preparations.
Incidentally, part of your triathlon race training will need to involve "bricks". This is where you actually practice transitioning between two of the different events. On the day of the triathlon, you're going to need to make smooth, rapid, accurate transitions from water to bike, from bike to hitting the pavement. These transitions will involve gear changes. You have to set up brick practicing once you get a little deeper into your triathlon training.
You will need an incredible balance of diverse athletic skills on race day. Different muscle groups, different types of hand-eye coordination, some speed, some agility, some endurance will all have to come into synergistic play. In your training program, go heavier with training in your weaker capabilities until all is in balance for you.
Finally, for more balance: you have to keep from over-training. If you over-train, you'll just crash on the big day. Triathlon training programs are more about balance than anything else.
